Many of our gardeners now have garden plots under several inches of snow, so it may be difficult to think about getting the ground ready for planting. However, what better way to pass many dreary hours than preparing your seed beds while you await the promise of Spring and warmer weather?
As temperatures begin to rise across many regions and the calendar moves toward Spring, we encourage each of you to begin planting cucumber and bean seeds. Some favorite cukes include ‘Summer Dance’ Hybrid or popular heirloom ‘Straight Eight.’ Popular bush green beans include ‘Blue Lake 274‘ or ‘Jade.’ But as always, we encourage you to expand your gardening experiences by also trying a few new varieties like new cucumber ‘Tanja‘, whose European breeding produces burpless, virtually seedless, flavorful fruits. New bush bean ‘Strike‘ has the longest harvest window of any garden bean.
April is a perfect time to transplant flowers across many regions due to the occasional light rain and warmer, longer days. Ordering and sowing seeds now will produce joyful color in your garden space and in container gardens in time for Mother’s Day in May. For container gardens consider mixing Angelonia, Vinca and Dichondra for maximum color, height variance and softness.
March weather is unpredictable so if you haven’t invested in a growing station be sure to start you seeds in an area where you have access to burlap, plastic or old sheets in the event a sudden freeze rolls your way.
